Our Beginning - The El Dorado Nordic Ski Patrol was started during the winter of 1982 by a small group of cross country skiers working as volunteers for the U.S. Forest Service. During the first few winters the patrol helped mark and maintain ski trails at Loon Lake, at 42 Mile near Strawberry and at other locations in the Eldorado National Forest.
With the increasing popularity of cross country skiing and other winter recreation, the Ski Patrol began teaching classes on winter safety in the mountains. Training sessions, still held annually, include:
Winter Route Planning
Navigation by Map, Compass and Altimeter
Avalanche Safety
Emergency Shelter Construction
Emergency Equipment Repair
