2007 Echo-to-Kirkwood Race

We are sad to announce that it is not feasible for the El Dorado Nordic Ski Patrol to put on the 2007 Echo-to-Kirkwood Race and Tour. We regret that the resources are not available to conduct the extensive planning and preparation needed to hold the Race, in addition to other barriers that cannot be overcome.

Over the next year we will consider alternative approaches. EDNSP is supportive of other groups taking on the task. If a feasible plan can be developed, we hope the Race can continue in the future.

The Patrol is proud of the part we played in the 33-year history of the Race.

meadows, climbing 1300 vertical feet in the second mile, moving through dense woods, and finishing with a fun descent to the Kirkwood Touring Center. Read more about the Trail> Top of page

The course is flagged and the tracks have been skied. Checkpoints and cookie stations staffed by the El Dorado Nordic Ski Patrol are set up along the trail for your safety. This is a long, high-altitude course for skiers and snowshoers with good endurance, and looking for a

FUN and challenging day of skiing and snowshoeing through the scenic Sierra High Country. The race and tour begin at 10:00 AM at the Echo Summit Sno-Park. Top of page

Categories: There are 12 age categories for the event, 6 each for men and women. They are: 19 and younger, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, and 60 and older.

Parking and Shuttle Bus: This is a point-to-point ski and snowshoe course with parking available at both ends. Parking at the Start is located at the Echo Summit SNO-PARK on the south side of Highway 50 at Echo Summit. A California SNO-PARK permit is required to park here.

Parking near the Finish is located on Loop Road next to the Kirkwood Fire Department, just off Kirkwood Meadows Drive. It is approximately 1¼ mile from the Finish at the Kirkwood Cross Country & Snowshoe Center. Follow the signs to this parking lot when arriving in the morning. See map below. There is no fee to park here.

An optional pre-race shuttle bus from Kirkwood to Echo Summit is available. YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER AND RESERVE A BUS SEAT TO USE THIS SHUTTLE. Park and board the shuttle buses at the Loop Road parking lot. Bus boarding is from 7:00 AM to 7:45 AM. Please arrive early to allow time to board. The last shuttle bus will depart the Loop Road parking lot promptly at 7:45 AM so that it can arrive at Echo Summit well before the 10:00 AM start.

As participants finish the course at the Kirkwood Cross Country & Snowshoe Center, either Kirkwood's free shuttle or EDNSP volunteers will transport them back to their vehicles at the Loop Road parking lot. There is no post-race transportation provided from Kirkwood back to Echo Summit. Participants who park at Echo Summit must make their own arrangements.

All participants may utilize 'warm-up' bags at the Start. Any extra clothing that a participant does not wish to carry with them (and that they wish to have available at the Finish) may be bagged at the Start and transported to the Finish for the participant to pick up there when they arrive.

There are restrooms on the buses and at both parking areas. Top of page

Equipment: THIS IS NOT A MACHINE GROOMED TRACK SKIING RACE! Skiers and snowshoers will be on a well-flagged packed track. Advanced skiers usually prefer skating skis. Intermediate skiers and those who choose to ski the race as a tour will prefer the extra stability of wider touring cross country skis. We recommend the use of climbing skins for skiers of all skill levels to complete the two climbs. Winners usually finish the race in less than 2 hours. Those skiing or snowshoeing the race as a tour should be prepared to ski 4-6 hours. This is a backcountry ski event. Please be prepared with proper clothing; for your safety, NO COTTON. Top of page

Incident Command System: The Echo-to-Kirkwood Race and Tour is managed using the Incident Command System (ICS.) The ICS is a universal management system using common positions and terms. It was developed to manage any incident, regardless of the type, size, goals, agencies involved, number of personnel, level of involvement, or urgency. It is adaptable to the particular mission at hand. The ICS is used for forest fires, earthquakes, floods, search and rescues, vehicle accidents, special events, and other planned and unplanned incidents.
